Aluminum Dent Repair: Can PDR Fix Aluminum Panels?
Yes. Aluminum body panels can be repaired with paintless dent repair, but the metal has no spring-back memory, work-hardens around the impact and cracks if it is pushed too fast. It needs a technician trained specifically on aluminum, controlled heat and more time on the panel — typically 30 to 60 percent longer than the same dent in steel.
Aluminum has quietly taken over the outside of the modern vehicle. Every Ford F-150 built since 2015 wears an aluminum body. Tesla, Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover, Porsche, BMW and Mercedes use aluminum hoods, doors, fenders and deck lids across most of their range, and many mainstream cars now use an aluminum hood on an otherwise steel body.
From the outside you cannot tell. Under a dent tool the difference is immediate. Steel remembers the shape it was pressed into and wants to return to it; aluminum does not. It is softer to move but stiffer to control, it hardens locally around every impact, and once it is stretched it stays stretched.
That is why a real share of dent shops quietly decline aluminum work, or take it on with steel technique and leave behind low spots, tool marks and micro-cracking. Between our Burlington and Hamilton shops we repair aluminum panels every week, including hail-damaged F-150s with hundreds of dents.

Why aluminum behaves differently under a dent tool
- No metal memory — aluminum will not spring back on its own, so every millimetre of the repair is placed deliberately
- Work hardening — the metal stiffens around the dent, and re-working the same spot makes it harder, not softer
- Crack risk — pushed too fast or too cold, aluminum tears instead of stretching, and a crack cannot be repaired paintlessly
- Panels are thicker — manufacturers add thickness to offset aluminum's lower stiffness, so more force is needed with less feedback
- Heat matters — controlled warming relaxes the panel; a heat gun in untrained hands will burn clear coat or distort the panel
- Glue-pull work needs aluminum-specific tabs and adhesives to release cleanly from the finish
Which vehicles have aluminum body panels
| Vehicle | Aluminum panels | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ford F-150 (2015+) | Full body: hood, doors, fenders, bed, tailgate | The most common aluminum hail vehicle in Ontario |
| Tesla Model S / Model X | Most exterior panels | Model 3 and Model Y are largely steel with some aluminum |
| Land Rover / Range Rover | Full aluminum architecture | Requires aluminum-trained technique throughout |
| Audi A8, A7, A6, Q7 | Hood, doors, fenders | Audi Space Frame models are almost entirely aluminum |
| BMW 5, 7, X5, X7 | Hood, doors, fenders | Mixed-material construction |
| Mercedes-Benz E, S, GLE | Hood, fenders, doors | Mixed-material construction |
| Jaguar F-Pace, XE, XF | Full aluminum architecture | Aluminum-intensive since 2015 |
| Chevrolet Silverado / GMC Sierra | Hood, doors, tailgate | Steel bed and fenders |
| Corvette, Porsche 911, Cayenne | Hood, doors, fenders | Aluminum hoods are near-universal on performance cars |

What aluminum dent repair costs
Aluminum is priced higher than steel for the same dent, and that is honest rather than opportunistic — the repair simply takes longer and the margin for error is smaller. As a general guide, expect roughly 30 to 60 percent above the equivalent steel repair.
A single door ding on an aluminum panel typically runs a modest premium over steel. A hail-damaged aluminum F-150 is where the difference is felt: dent counts run into the hundreds and every one of them is a slower repair, which is why aluminum hail claims frequently come in well above a comparable steel truck.
Even at that premium, paintless dent repair on aluminum remains dramatically cheaper than panel replacement. Replacing an aluminum panel means new parts, refinishing, blending into adjacent panels and, on many vehicles, recalibrating driver-assist sensors mounted to the panel. We quote every aluminum job in person and for free.
When aluminum cannot be repaired paintlessly
The paint has to be intact. Any crack, chip or scrape through the clear coat on an aluminum panel means refinish work, and we will say so rather than take the job.
Cracked or torn metal is finished for PDR — unlike steel, aluminum that has split cannot be worked back together. Very sharp creases on a thick aluminum panel, damage on a bonded panel edge, and previously repaired or filled aluminum are the other common declines.
You will get a straight answer at the estimate. If the honest recommendation is a body shop, that is what we will tell you, at no charge.
Why aluminum work belongs with a specialist
Aluminum is not a harder version of steel work; parts of steel technique actively have to be unlearned. The technician has to read the panel with less feedback, plan the sequence before the first push because there is no second chance on a work-hardened spot, and manage heat throughout.
Doing only paintless dent repair, all day, for a combined 75-plus years and more than 100,000 vehicles is what makes that possible. If a shop hesitates when you say the word aluminum, that hesitation is telling you something useful.

What customers say
"When my vehicle was recently damaged by a severe hailstorm, it ended up with a significant number of dents across the body. After contacting my insurance company, I was initially referred to a general body shop. However, since this was strictly dent-related damage, I wanted to find a shop that truly specializes in paintless dent repair. That's when I came across Precision Dent Burlington."
"I had my brand new car destroyed by hail damage back in August. The car was covered in dents in pretty much all areas — roof, hood, rails, doors, trunk, quarter panel, fenders. I researched a few places and even went to another highly reviewed shop to get an estimate. The other shop started mentioning paint and parts."
"Andreas and his team were great! Very quick and transparent! Andreas was especially helpful in dealing with my difficult insurance in the process of getting the repair approved. Despite heavy hail damage, the car looks brand new now!"
"Great experience dealing with these guys. Very friendly and accommodative and their work is very impressive. Had them repair two BMW's with hail damage and they both looked new when they were done."
"I had several dents in my Yukon Denali after a major hail storm. Thanks to the efficient service of Precision Dent Repair, my vehicle looks as good as new again. I would highly recommend this company!"
"Great experience from start to finish, they accommodated my schedule and took care of everything through insurance. Easy process and repaired a ton of damage from a hail storm. Highly recommend."

Common questions
Can paintless dent repair be done on aluminum panels?
Yes. Aluminum dents can be removed paintlessly, but the panel has no metal memory and work-hardens around the impact, so it requires an aluminum-trained technician, controlled heat and more time than steel.
Is aluminum dent repair more expensive than steel?
Usually yes, roughly 30 to 60 percent more for the same dent, because the repair takes significantly longer. It is still far cheaper than replacing and refinishing an aluminum panel.
Can hail damage on an aluminum F-150 be fixed with PDR?
Yes, and it is one of the most common aluminum jobs we do. Hail-damaged aluminum trucks take longer than steel because every dent is a slower repair, but the factory paint stays on the vehicle.
Does aluminum dent repair damage the paint?
No. Nothing is sanded, filled or resprayed. Aluminum-specific glue tabs and controlled heat are used precisely so the factory finish is left intact.
Why do some shops refuse aluminum dent repair?
Aluminum requires different technique and tooling than steel, and a technician who is excellent on steel is not automatically competent on aluminum. Shops without that training decline the work rather than risk cracking a panel.
Can a cracked aluminum panel be repaired?
Not with paintless dent repair. Aluminum that has cracked or torn cannot be worked back together, and that vehicle needs a collision shop.
How can I tell if my vehicle has aluminum panels?
A magnet will not stick to aluminum. F-150s from 2015 onward, most Land Rover, Jaguar and Audi models, Tesla Model S and X, and the hoods of many performance cars are aluminum. Bring the vehicle in and we will confirm at the estimate.
Do you repair aluminum panels in Burlington and Hamilton?
